What Is an Apex Pergola?

An apex pergola has a pitched roof structure rather than a flat beam across the top. The ridge runs through the centre, creating a higher point in the middle and a balanced slope on both sides.

You’ll sometimes see these described as:

  • Pitched roof pergolas
  • A-frame pergolas
  • Gable pergolas
  • 4 pitch apex pergolas

The result is a pergola that feels taller and more open overhead, even if the footprint is the same as a flat design. That extra height through the centre changes the proportions of the space. It draws your eye upward and stops the structure from feeling low or boxed in, especially over larger patios. Even with the same width and depth as a flat timber pergola, the pitched roofline gives it more presence and a clearer shape. It looks more intentional, more like a defined outdoor feature rather than just a frame placed over a seating area.

Apex Pergola Kits & Bespoke Options

Our apex pergola kits are supplied pre-cut for straightforward assembly, with structural components sized to suit the span. Fixings and guidance are included unless stated otherwise on the product page.

Standard sizes typically include:

  • 3m x 3m apex pergola
  • 4m x 3m apex pergola
  • 4m x 4m apex pergola

If your space isn’t standard - tight boundaries, wall-mounted layouts, or larger entertaining areas - we can produce a bespoke apex timber pergola built to your dimensions.

We supply:

  • Freestanding apex pergolas
  • Lean-to apex pergolas
  • Open roof apex designs
  • Apex pergolas with roof options

Apex Pergolas With Roof Options

Many customers choose an apex design because it works particularly well with added cover.

The pitched structure naturally allows for roof finishes such as:

  • Polycarbonate roof panels
  • Timber boarding
  • Shingle-style coverings

If you’re adding a roof, the slope helps with water runoff and gives a more complete look than a flat canopy. For patios used year-round, this can make a noticeable difference.

If you prefer an open structure for climbing plants and filtered light, that’s available too. The apex shape still adds height and character, even without solid roofing.

Why Choose an Apex Timber Pergola?

An apex timber pergola tends to suit:

  • Larger patio areas
  • Outdoor dining spaces
  • Hot tub areas
  • Garden features where you want more visual structure

The additional height through the centre can make the space feel less enclosed while still providing definition. It also pairs well with lighting, hanging heaters or decorative rafters.

Compared to a flat roof pergola, an apex design feels more substantial. It draws the eye upward and gives the structure a clear focal point.

Open Roof vs Covered Apex Pergolas

If you’re deciding between open and covered:

  • Open roof apex pergola – better for light flow and climbing plants.
  • Apex pergola with roof – better for shelter and more consistent use in mixed weather.

Both use the same pitched frame; the difference is simply what sits on top.

If you’re unsure, it usually comes down to how you plan to use the space. Dining area used weekly? A roof may help. Decorative garden feature? Open design may be enough.

Common Questions About Apex Pergolas

Is an apex pergola stronger than a flat pergola?
Both can be structurally sound when built correctly. The apex design distributes weight differently due to the pitched roof structure.

Can I attach an apex pergola to my house?
Yes. Lean-to apex pergolas are available, but correct structural fixing is important.

Do apex pergola kits come ready to assemble?
Most are supplied pre-cut with instructions and fixings included. Always check the individual product listing for specifics.

Does an apex pergola need planning permission?
In many cases, no. BUT height and proximity to boundaries can affect this. Always check local guidance if unsure.

Is VAT included in the price?

Yes, VAT is included.

Can I attach heaters or hanging lights to the pergola?

Yes. In most cases you can attach hanging lights and some types of outdoor heaters, but it should always be carried out safely.

We suggest:

  • Only using outdoor-rated (weatherproof) electrical fittings
  • Making sure anything hung is securely fixed and within the pergola’s load limits
  • Avoiding heavy items being suspended from slats or moving roof sections (if applicable)
  • Using a fully qualified electrician for any wired lighting or heater installation

For safety reasons, we don’t recommend hanging very heavy items or using open-flame heat sources.

Can I build it on a slope or uneven ground?

Yes - a pergola can be installed on sloped or uneven ground, but it’s really important that the base is properly prepared first.

For the best results (and a safe, "stable" finish), we always recommend installing your pergola on a solid, level surface such as patio slabs, concrete, decking, or a suitable timber base frame. You could always use a handy spirit level to check. This is especially important for louvred pergolas, where the roof does need to sit perfectly level to open and close smoothly.

If your garden has a slight slope, you might actually be able to level the pergola using a prepared base or adjustable fixings. For steeper slopes, it’s generally best to create a level platform first using groundwork or a raised frame.

If you’re unsure, send us a photo of your area. We’re happy to advise on the best way to install your pergola securely.

Are the timber pergola components pressure treated?

Yes - all of the timber pergola components are pressure treated, including the roofing timbers.

This treatment helps protect the wood against rot, decay, and weather damage, making it far more suitable for year-round outdoor use and helping to ensure your pergola lasts for many years with the right care.

Can I have a pergola without planning permission?

In most cases, you can usually install a pergola in your garden without planning permission, as long as it meets UK permitted development guidelines.

Rules can vary depending on things like the pergola’s height, where it’s sitting, and whether your property is listed or in a conservation area.

To be safe, we always recommend checking with your local council before installation, especially if you're unsure.

What maintenance is required?

Pergolas are low maintenance, but a little care does really go a long way in keeping them looking great for years.

For the pressure-treated timber pergolas, we recommend:

  • Giving it a quick clean once or twice a year using warm soapy water and a soft brush
  • Keeping the base area clear of leaves, moss, and standing water
  • Checking fixings/bolts occasionally to make sure everything stays tight and secure
  • Applying a wood stain, oil, or protective finish every couple of years if you want to enhance the colour and add extra weather protection

Because the timber is pressure treated, it’s already protected against rot and decay. But adding a finish can help preserve the appearance over time, especially in harsher weather!
