Why Add a Pergola Over a Hot Tub?

Most people start looking for a pergola after a few months of owning the hot tub. Rain becomes inconvenient. Strong sun makes it uncomfortable. Neighbours suddenly feel closer than they used to.

A pergola for a hot tub solves all three.

  • It provides overhead shelter without fully enclosing the space
  • It adds height and structure
  • It makes the area feel more private and finished

Unlike a full gazebo or enclosed building, a pergola keeps airflow moving. That matters with steam because hot tubs release a lot of moisture. Open-sided or louvred designs allow steam to escape naturally.

Covered Hot Tub Pergolas

If weather protection is your priority, a covered hot tub pergola is usually the best option. Options such as the Pergolas With Polycarbonate Roof panels allow light through while protecting from rain. For a more solid finish, timber roof styles like Featheredge Roof Pergolas offer greater coverage.

If you want flexibility, an Electric Louvered Pergola lets you adjust the roof depending on conditions. Open it fully for ventilation, tilt for shade, or close it during rain. That adaptability makes it a popular choice for year-round hot tub use.

Timber or Aluminium for a Hot Tub Pergola?

Both work well - it depends on the look you’re going for.

Timber hot tub pergolas feel warmer and more traditional. They blend naturally into most gardens and can work well with fencing and decking.

Metal Pergolas and aluminium structures offer a more modern appearance and require less ongoing maintenance. They’re often chosen for modern patios and darker exterior finishes.

If you prefer a pitched roofline for extra height, an Apex Timber Pergola can give the hot tub area more presence without fully enclosing it.

Privacy Matters

For many buyers, privacy is just as important as shelter.

A pergola can be paired with slatted side panels, screening, or blinds to reduce visibility without cutting off airflow. Even partial screening can make a noticeable difference.

If your hot tub sits close to a boundary or neighbouring property, choosing a pergola with side elements or positioning it carefully can make the space feel far more comfortable.

Getting the Size Right

A common question is: what size pergola do I need for my hot tub?

For most standard 4–6 person tubs, a 3m x 3m pergola works well. It provides overhead cover while allowing enough space around the tub for steps and access.

Larger spa setups may benefit from a 4m span, especially if you want seating or storage alongside.

It’s always worth allowing a little extra clearance rather than matching the tub footprint exactly. You don’t want the structure to feel cramped once installed.

Things Worth Thinking About Before Installing

A few practical points that make a difference:

  • Ensure the base is level and capable of supporting both the tub and structure
  • Allow space for steam to escape — avoid fully sealing the roof area
  • Check overhead height so the space doesn’t feel boxed in
  • Make sure electrical components are positioned safely away from water

A pergola should enhance the experience, not create restrictions.

Make the Space Feel Like a Destination

Most people don’t buy a hot tub to use it only on perfect summer evenings. It gets used in spring when the air is still cold. In autumn when it’s damp. Sometimes even in light rain. That’s usually when you realise a bit of cover would make a real difference.

A hot tub pergola isn’t just about keeping rain off your head. It helps regulate light, cuts down glare on bright days, and gives the space a defined boundary so it doesn’t feel exposed. With the right roof style, you can sit comfortably in mixed weather without fully enclosing the area or trapping steam overhead.

It also gives you somewhere to mount lighting, hang towels, or add subtle screening if needed. Small practical things, but they make regular use easier. And if the hot tub gets used often, that convenience matters more than how it looks in photos.

Done properly, the pergola doesn’t overpower the spa - it supports it.

Yes, VAT is included.

Can I attach heaters or hanging lights to the pergola?

Yes. In most cases you can attach hanging lights and some types of outdoor heaters, but it should always be carried out safely.

We suggest:

  • Only using outdoor-rated (weatherproof) electrical fittings
  • Making sure anything hung is securely fixed and within the pergola’s load limits
  • Avoiding heavy items being suspended from slats or moving roof sections (if applicable)
  • Using a fully qualified electrician for any wired lighting or heater installation

For safety reasons, we don’t recommend hanging very heavy items or using open-flame heat sources.

Can I build it on a slope or uneven ground?

Yes - a pergola can be installed on sloped or uneven ground, but it’s really important that the base is properly prepared first.

For the best results (and a safe, "stable" finish), we always recommend installing your pergola on a solid, level surface such as patio slabs, concrete, decking, or a suitable timber base frame. You could always use a handy spirit level to check. This is especially important for louvred pergolas, where the roof does need to sit perfectly level to open and close smoothly.

If your garden has a slight slope, you might actually be able to level the pergola using a prepared base or adjustable fixings. For steeper slopes, it’s generally best to create a level platform first using groundwork or a raised frame.

If you’re unsure, send us a photo of your area. We’re happy to advise on the best way to install your pergola securely.

Are the timber pergola components pressure treated?

Yes - all of the timber pergola components are pressure treated, including the roofing timbers.

This treatment helps protect the wood against rot, decay, and weather damage, making it far more suitable for year-round outdoor use and helping to ensure your pergola lasts for many years with the right care.

Can I have a pergola without planning permission?

In most cases, you can usually install a pergola in your garden without planning permission, as long as it meets UK permitted development guidelines.

Rules can vary depending on things like the pergola’s height, where it’s sitting, and whether your property is listed or in a conservation area.

To be safe, we always recommend checking with your local council before installation, especially if you're unsure.

What maintenance is required?

Pergolas are low maintenance, but a little care does really go a long way in keeping them looking great for years.

For the pressure-treated timber pergolas, we recommend:

  • Giving it a quick clean once or twice a year using warm soapy water and a soft brush
  • Keeping the base area clear of leaves, moss, and standing water
  • Checking fixings/bolts occasionally to make sure everything stays tight and secure
  • Applying a wood stain, oil, or protective finish every couple of years if you want to enhance the colour and add extra weather protection

Because the timber is pressure treated, it’s already protected against rot and decay. But adding a finish can help preserve the appearance over time, especially in harsher weather!
