Choosing the Right Polycarbonate Roof Pergola

Clear, Tinted or Opal Panels

Clear roof polycarbonate maximises light transmission.

It keeps the area bright, which works well on north-facing patios. Tinted or smoke panels reduce glare and heat build-up during strong summer sun.

Opal finishes diffuse the light, softening shadows while still maintaining brightness.

The right choice depends on orientation. South-facing gardens often benefit from tinted or opal panels to control glare.

Solid vs Multiwall Polycarbonate

Solid sheets feel more glass-like and offer a sleek finish. Multiwall panels provide slightly better insulation and can help reduce noise during heavy rain.

Both are UV protected on the outer face, which must be installed correctly to prevent premature discolouration.

Built for British Weather

Rain, Wind and Drainage

Polycarbonate roof pergolas are designed to shed water efficiently. A slight roof pitch is essential. Water runs into gutters or off the edge rather than pooling.

Always ensure posts are securely anchored to a stable base such as a patio or concrete slab to prevent movement in strong wind.

Heat and Ventilation

Because light passes through the roof, some solar gain is inevitable. On bright summer days, especially in south- or west-facing gardens, the space beneath a clear polycarbonate roof can warm up noticeably by mid-afternoon. That doesn’t make it unusable, but it does mean planning matters.

Orientation is the first factor. A pergola positioned to catch full afternoon sun will feel different to one that benefits from partial shade from the house or nearby trees. Even a small amount of natural shade can significantly reduce heat build-up.

Airflow is just as important. Open-sided pergolas allow heat to escape naturally, while adding fixed side panels can trap warm air underneath. If you’re considering side screens or curtains for wind protection, think about how often you’ll want them fully closed in summer. Leaving at least two sides open encourages cross-ventilation, which helps regulate temperature.

Panel choice also plays a role. Clear polycarbonate maximises brightness but allows the most direct solar intensity through. Tinted or smoke panels reduce glare and cut down harsh sunlight, making seating areas more comfortable during peak hours. Opal finishes diffuse the light, softening shadows and spreading illumination more evenly across the space. They won’t eliminate heat, but they can make the environment feel less intense.

If your patio gets strong, uninterrupted sun for much of the day, choosing a tinted or opal polycarbonate roof pergola is often the more balanced option.

Installation and Maintenance

Pergola kits with polycarbonate roofs are supplied flat packed with fixings and instructions. Panels are pre-sized and designed to slot into roof channels securely. Installation is typically manageable for competent DIYers, though larger spans may require assistance.

Maintenance is straightforward:

  • Clean panels with warm soapy water and a soft cloth
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the UV coating
  • Check fixings and seals annually

One practical advantage of polycarbonate is serviceability. Individual panels can usually be replaced if damaged, without dismantling the entire structure.

Lean-To or Freestanding?

Lean-To Pergolas With Polycarbonate Roof

Wall-mounted designs create a sheltered extension of the house. They’re popular above patio doors because they reduce glare while maintaining natural light indoors.

Freestanding Polycarbonate Pergolas

Freestanding models suit open lawns or dedicated seating zones. They define space clearly while keeping the area bright and usable in changeable weather.

Planning Considerations in the UK

Many pergolas fall under permitted development, but height limits typically apply.

Structures within 2m of a boundary are often limited to 2.5m in height, while dual-pitched roofs can go higher if positioned further away.

Always check local guidance before installation, particularly in conservation areas.

Is a Polycarbonate Roof Pergola Right for You?

Choose this option if you want:

  • Reliable rain protection
  • A bright, usable patio area
  • Low maintenance materials
  • A lighter alternative to tiled or timber roofs

If full shade is your priority, a solid timber roof may suit better. If adjustable airflow is key, a louvred pergola could be worth considering. But if your goal is shelter without losing daylight, pergolas with polycarbonate roofs strike the right balance.

Yes, VAT is included.

Can I attach heaters or hanging lights to the pergola?

Yes. In most cases you can attach hanging lights and some types of outdoor heaters, but it should always be carried out safely.

We suggest:

  • Only using outdoor-rated (weatherproof) electrical fittings
  • Making sure anything hung is securely fixed and within the pergola’s load limits
  • Avoiding heavy items being suspended from slats or moving roof sections (if applicable)
  • Using a fully qualified electrician for any wired lighting or heater installation

For safety reasons, we don’t recommend hanging very heavy items or using open-flame heat sources.

Can I build it on a slope or uneven ground?

Yes - a pergola can be installed on sloped or uneven ground, but it’s really important that the base is properly prepared first.

For the best results (and a safe, "stable" finish), we always recommend installing your pergola on a solid, level surface such as patio slabs, concrete, decking, or a suitable timber base frame. You could always use a handy spirit level to check. This is especially important for louvred pergolas, where the roof does need to sit perfectly level to open and close smoothly.

If your garden has a slight slope, you might actually be able to level the pergola using a prepared base or adjustable fixings. For steeper slopes, it’s generally best to create a level platform first using groundwork or a raised frame.

If you’re unsure, send us a photo of your area. We’re happy to advise on the best way to install your pergola securely.

Are the timber pergola components pressure treated?

Yes - all of the timber pergola components are pressure treated, including the roofing timbers.

This treatment helps protect the wood against rot, decay, and weather damage, making it far more suitable for year-round outdoor use and helping to ensure your pergola lasts for many years with the right care.

Can I have a pergola without planning permission?

In most cases, you can usually install a pergola in your garden without planning permission, as long as it meets UK permitted development guidelines.

Rules can vary depending on things like the pergola’s height, where it’s sitting, and whether your property is listed or in a conservation area.

To be safe, we always recommend checking with your local council before installation, especially if you're unsure.

What maintenance is required?

Pergolas are low maintenance, but a little care does really go a long way in keeping them looking great for years.

For the pressure-treated timber pergolas, we recommend:

  • Giving it a quick clean once or twice a year using warm soapy water and a soft brush
  • Keeping the base area clear of leaves, moss, and standing water
  • Checking fixings/bolts occasionally to make sure everything stays tight and secure
  • Applying a wood stain, oil, or protective finish every couple of years if you want to enhance the colour and add extra weather protection

Because the timber is pressure treated, it’s already protected against rot and decay. But adding a finish can help preserve the appearance over time, especially in harsher weather!
