Choosing the Right Featheredge Pergola

Apex, Lean-To or 4 Pitch?

An apex roof pergola suits open garden spaces and creates height through the centre. That extra ridge height doesn’t just look good, it improves airflow and gives the structure a lighter feel overhead. In practical terms, the dual pitch encourages steady water runoff on both sides, which is useful in heavy rain. Apex designs also work well over long dining tables or outdoor sofas because the higher middle section stops the space feeling boxed in.

A lean-to pergola is usually fixed to an external wall, so it feels like a natural extension of the house. The rear sits higher, then slopes away to the front. This keeps the overall profile lower and often helps with planning constraints, especially near boundaries. Lean-to featheredge roof pergolas are popular outside bifold or patio doors because they reduce glare and light rain without blocking too much daylight from the room behind. They also make good use of narrower patios where a freestanding structure might feel intrusive.

A 4 pitch gazebo, sometimes called a hip or pyramid roof, slopes down on all four sides. This design distributes water evenly in every direction and tends to perform well in exposed gardens where wind direction changes. Visually, it feels balanced and symmetrical, which suits central lawn positions or more formal layouts. Because all sides slope down, it can also create a slightly more enclosed, sheltered atmosphere underneath, ideal for hot tubs or dedicated seating zones.

Standard Sizes or Made to Measure

Common footprints range from compact 3m x 3m seating areas to larger 4m and 5m spans designed for proper entertaining. A 3m x 3m featheredge pergola is usually enough for a corner sofa set or a four- to six-seat dining table. Step up to 3m x 4m or 4m x 4m and you’ve got room for a full outdoor dining layout with circulation space around it, which makes a big difference day to day.

If you’re covering a hot tub, outdoor kitchen or long rectangular dining table, measure more than just the item itself. You need clearance for steps, lid lifters, chair pull-back space and comfortable walkways. As a rough guide, allow at least 600–800mm around fixed features so the area doesn’t feel cramped. Overhang matters too. A modest roof overhang can improve rain protection, stopping water dripping straight onto the edge of your seating area.

Height is just as important as width and depth. Think about finished floor level, especially if installing onto decking, and check how the overall roof height fits within your garden layout and any boundary restrictions.

Made to measure options are useful when standard sizes waste space or clash with existing paving lines. Slight adjustments in width or projection can help you align posts neatly with slab joints, avoid drains or maximise a narrow patio. In tighter gardens, that flexibility often makes the difference between a pergola that feels squeezed in and one that looks properly integrated.

Why Go With a Featheredge Roof?

How Featheredge Boards Work

Featheredge boards are tapered, overlapping timber boards traditionally used for weatherboarding and cladding.

The overlap creates a natural watershed effect. Rain runs down the face of each board and off the edge, rather than driving straight through.

That’s why featheredge roof pergolas are popular in exposed UK gardens. They shed water effectively without relying on membranes or plastic panels.

Timber, Treatment and Longevity

Most quality pergola kits use pressure-treated timber to help resist rot and decay. Treatment penetrates the wood fibres, but cut ends should always be sealed after installation.

Over time, the timber will weather to a silvery tone unless stained or painted.

A simple maintenance routine helps extend lifespan:

  • Recoat with exterior wood stain or paint every few years
  • Keep debris off the roof surface
  • Check fixings annually

Installation and Base Preparation

A wooden pergola with roof needs a solid base. That could be a concrete slab, patio, or structurally sound decking.

Posts are usually bolted down using post anchors or ground fixings to prevent movement in strong wind.

Most pergola kits are designed for DIY assembly with basic tools, though larger structures may need two or three people to lift beams safely.

Planning Permission in the UK

In many cases, a garden pergola falls under permitted development. General rules often include:

  • Maximum height of 2.5m if within 2m of a boundary
  • Up to 4m for a dual pitched roof (in other positions)
  • Structures must not cover more than 50% of the garden area

Rules vary, especially in conservation areas or for listed buildings, so it’s always worth checking locally before installation.

Featheredge vs Other Roof Types

Compared with polycarbonate, a featheredge roof offers more privacy and a more traditional finish. Compared with louvred pergolas, it’s fixed rather than adjustable, but far simpler mechanically.

Against felt shingle roofs, it delivers a cleaner timber look without layered roofing sheets.

If you want a pergola kit that feels substantial, blends with fencing or timber cladding, and stands up to British weather, a featheredge roof pergola is a practical and attractive choice.

Why Featheredge Roof Pergolas Add Long-Term Value

A featheredge roof pergola is not just a garden feature. It’s a structural upgrade to how you use your outdoor space.

As the roof is constructed using overlapping timber boards, as opposed to fabric or sheeting materials, it feels like much more of a solid addition. This means you can use the space more effectively.

There are also aesthetic benefits. The featheredge boarding matches nicely with other timber features of your garden fencing, sleeper bed, or shed cladding. Over time, as the timber weathers, it all becomes one colour. This stops the “mix-and-match” look that sometimes occurs with aluminium or polycarbonate panels.

From a property perspective, well-built timber garden structures often make outdoor areas feel more defined. A pergola with a solid featheredge roof creates what estate agents like to call an “outdoor room”. Buyers can instantly picture how it would be used - dining area, hot tub shelter, covered lounge. That clarity adds perceived value.

And practically, because featheredge is a simple mechanical system of overlapping boards, there are no moving parts to maintain. No motors. No panels to replace. If a board is ever damaged, it can be removed and replaced individually.

So beyond shelter, a featheredge roof pergola offers something more lasting: structure, definition and a space that genuinely extends how your garden works throughout the year.

Yes, VAT is included.

Can I attach heaters or hanging lights to the pergola?

Yes. In most cases you can attach hanging lights and some types of outdoor heaters, but it should always be carried out safely.

We suggest:

  • Only using outdoor-rated (weatherproof) electrical fittings
  • Making sure anything hung is securely fixed and within the pergola’s load limits
  • Avoiding heavy items being suspended from slats or moving roof sections (if applicable)
  • Using a fully qualified electrician for any wired lighting or heater installation

For safety reasons, we don’t recommend hanging very heavy items or using open-flame heat sources.

Can I build it on a slope or uneven ground?

Yes - a pergola can be installed on sloped or uneven ground, but it’s really important that the base is properly prepared first.

For the best results (and a safe, "stable" finish), we always recommend installing your pergola on a solid, level surface such as patio slabs, concrete, decking, or a suitable timber base frame. You could always use a handy spirit level to check. This is especially important for louvred pergolas, where the roof does need to sit perfectly level to open and close smoothly.

If your garden has a slight slope, you might actually be able to level the pergola using a prepared base or adjustable fixings. For steeper slopes, it’s generally best to create a level platform first using groundwork or a raised frame.

If you’re unsure, send us a photo of your area. We’re happy to advise on the best way to install your pergola securely.

Are the timber pergola components pressure treated?

Yes - all of the timber pergola components are pressure treated, including the roofing timbers.

This treatment helps protect the wood against rot, decay, and weather damage, making it far more suitable for year-round outdoor use and helping to ensure your pergola lasts for many years with the right care.

Can I have a pergola without planning permission?

In most cases, you can usually install a pergola in your garden without planning permission, as long as it meets UK permitted development guidelines.

Rules can vary depending on things like the pergola’s height, where it’s sitting, and whether your property is listed or in a conservation area.

To be safe, we always recommend checking with your local council before installation, especially if you're unsure.

What maintenance is required?

Pergolas are low maintenance, but a little care does really go a long way in keeping them looking great for years.

For the pressure-treated timber pergolas, we recommend:

  • Giving it a quick clean once or twice a year using warm soapy water and a soft brush
  • Keeping the base area clear of leaves, moss, and standing water
  • Checking fixings/bolts occasionally to make sure everything stays tight and secure
  • Applying a wood stain, oil, or protective finish every couple of years if you want to enhance the colour and add extra weather protection

Because the timber is pressure treated, it’s already protected against rot and decay. But adding a finish can help preserve the appearance over time, especially in harsher weather!
